Francis Schwartz, born in 1940 in Texas, began his musical studies with the eminent pianist Patricio Gutierrez. He earned both B.S. and M.S. degrees from The Juilliard School in New York City and went on to receive a Ph.D. with highest honors from the University of Paris.
Dr. Schwartz served as Dean of Humanities at the University of Puerto Rico and held major academic and administrative positions over a distinguished 33-year career. He was honored by the French government with the title Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres.
An innovative composer, Dr. Schwartz is celebrated for his music theater works, many of which actively involve the audience in the performance experience. His compositions have been performed worldwide at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, Centre Pompidou, and the Reina Sofía Concert Hall, among others.
