Sophie Dunér is a Swedish singer, improviser, and composer with an international performing career spanning venues from CBGB’s in New York to the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Festival O/Modernt in Sweden. She has served as composer-in-residence with the U.S.-based new music ensemble Present Music and is a four-time award recipient from the Swedish Arts Council.


Sophie’s recordings include Strictly Business (2022), The City of My Soul (2013) with the Callino Quartet, The City of Dizzy (2016) with electric cellist Jeremy Harman, Songs Eclectic (2020) with guitarist Gene Pritsker, and The Rain in Spain with Rory Stuart, Matt Penmann, and Kahlil Kwame Bell. She also recorded a duo CD with avant-garde bassist Dominic Duval Sr., set for release in 2024, and her new album Modern Mingus with Bertram Lehman is forthcoming the same year.


Trained in jazz improvisation with Hal Crook, George Garzone, and Ed Tomassi, Sophie holds a degree in vocal performance from Berklee College of Music and studied at the Stockhausen Summer Courses in Germany. Her collaborations span contemporary and jazz luminaries, including Guy Livingston, Francis Schwartz, Don McCaslin, Mark Turner, Seamus Blake, Aaron Goldberg, and many others.


Sophie’s performances have graced prestigious venues and festivals worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, Tivoli Vredenburg, Stockholm Jazz Festival, November Music (NL), Getxo Jazz Festival (ES), and Sapporo Snow Festival (JP). Upcoming engagements include a new duo collaboration with acclaimed pianist Steve Beck.
